pandu sahadeva

The curse has roots in Pandu's death.Pandu had a premonition of his death and had one day told his sons to eat his flesh after he died. Years of meditation and celibacy had given him great knowledge which they could inherit by doing so.

Now, when Pandu died, the devastated family cremated the father ( and Madri jumped into the pyre) and thus his flesh turned to ashes.Meanwhile, Sahadeva noticed a piece of his father's flesh being carried away by some ants. He immediately picked it up and ate it.Because of this he gained all worldly knowledge about the future.Krishna then asked Sahadeva if he wanted god as a friend to which he answered yes. And Krishna then advised him to never tell his thoughts or premonitions to anyone 'voluntarily'.Sahadeva, thus, waited for the right question to be asked which nobody ever did. Due to Krishna's request or advise , which he could not deny, Sahadeva could do nothing but only await the inevitable.

In Andhra, a secretive person who doesn't reveal the truth despite knowing about it is called a 'Sahadeva'.

A beautiful three page long description about Pandu's death and the consequences can be read in Devdutt Pattanaik's book 'Jaya'.Hope it helps.......
